blackfern girls coverSomething I love to do occasionally is read a book without any preparation. I like to admire the cover, take in the title, and then start reading at the first page. I don’t read the back, or reviews, or the short synopsis on GoodReads or Amazon. I know nothing of what I’ll find between the covers, and it’s an adventure in reading.

When I started reading Blackfern Girls by Elizabeth Yon, I didn’t know what to expect from the stories from Blackfern County. I had seen the cover, and that was enough for me.

These four short stories were the perfect read as we move into chilly autumn, with Halloween on the horizon and the days growing shorter. With her brilliant prose and extraordinary setting, Elizabeth’s stories gave me the chills and pulled me into their dark reality. There was no escaping until the very end. I literally couldn’t put my Kindle down until I had finished all four haunting tales.

Blackfern Girls could easily be described as a collection of coming-of-age stories, but there is no easy way to describe the haunted realities each of these girls experience. There is death, abandonment, frightful creatures in dank forests, some possible witchcraft and a hint of fairy tale.

The stories themselves are each mysterious and entertaining. Each one surprised me with horrifying secrets, paranormal cunning, and a world that questions the journey we take in death.

Blackfern Girls is now available through Amazon, and it’s high on my list of recommended reads during this Halloween season. If you’re looking for something to send chills down your spine, for less than five dollars you can read four amazing stories by an unbelievably talented writer.
